I am many things.
I am a husband and a father. Those things mean a lot to me.
I am an advanced heart failure cardiologist and am the medical director for heart failure and heart transplant at Spectrum Health in Grand Rapids, MI.
Professionally my passion is improving the care of patients with heart failure syndromes throughout Michigan and beyond.
Along the way I am continually trying to figure out what it means to be a human being and a physician and me. I think that means that we all have a lot in common. With that in mind I am hoping to share some updates and ideas and that you will find them interesting and helpful.
There are a lot of things that have put me where I am now. I had the privilege of serving as a physician in the US Navy. The Navy taught me a lot about leadership. These were skills I didn’t realize that I needed but have been immensely important in my current role. I also had the privilege of being a primary care internal medicine physician. Once again I gained perspective and skills that I consider invaluable in my current role. I am also a Christian. This provides me with a unique perspective on the human condition and flavors how I think. I don’t expect everyone to think the same way as I do but I hope that together we can learn from each other.

fabulous article, thanks for sharing your gift with the rest of us. Ps. it has been clear to me that you are a Christian by the way you live – thanks for being that example. I pray for healing for you regularly.
My son James admires your work and I appreciate the article, “Why the fuse”. Thank you.
